Soaring

I was first introduced to the ancient sport of falconry while sitting around a camp fire one night in the middle of Jordan’s Wadi Rum desert. On either side of me were Arab falconers seemingly intent on trying to outdo one another relating to the beauty, intelligence, speed and performance of their prized possessions – their falcons! I was captivated from the get-go, when they shared their wisdom with me:

“The sport owes much of its popularity to the almost mystical levels of trust and respect that co-exist between the falconer and his/her falcon – two creatures with absolutely nothing in common. Yet, they complement each other, not despite of, but rather thanks to their differences.”

That intimate relationship… that brought them to a whole other level in the conversation:

“Imagine for a moment that we have to choose between our bird and a beautiful woman as to where to invest our discretionary time, energy, and money. Both relationships are challenging and a wealth of intense passion, frustration, fun, and victory. Do we have the courage to let the falcon go off on her own, instead of doing what we wish her to do? Where does ‘free will’ begin and end? What can we ‘handle’ when it comes to the woman we love?”

These magical conversations inspired me to the ‘Soaring’ series: Falcon and woman have become one and the same – strong, intelligent, noble, and elegant.

It is this miraculous creature that eventually decides for whom she’ll spread her wings.
